Infections tend to occur with increased frequency and severity in individuals with diabetes.
The common infections like urinary tract infections, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, occur with increased frequency ,with a chance to cause more complications.

Some rare infections like rhinocerebral mucormycosis, malignant otitis externa, emphysematous cholecystitis occur almost exclusively in diabetics.

Organisms causing lung infection in diabetics are similar to those causing lung infection in non-diabetics.But certain organisms like the gram-negative bacterias, staphylococcus aureus etc are more frequent.

Susceptibility to infections like vulvovaginitis, superficial fungal infections, furunculosis are also increased.

The susceptibility to post-operative infections are also increased in diabetic individuals.

The major determinant of infections in diabetics, is glycemic control[control of blood sugar].Poor control of blood sugar predisposes a diabetic individual to these infections.Strict control of blood sugar is a must for all diabetic individuals.
