BILIRUBIN

Bilirubin,is a breakdown product of the heme containing proteins in the body.Serum and urine bilirubin are very common laboratory test used as a component of liver function test.

Bilirubin is found in the body,in two forms - conjugated[direct] and unconjugated[indirect] bilirubin.

Conjugated bilirubin,is that bilirubin that is water soluble thus excreted by the kidney.

Unconjugated bilirubin, is water insoluble,and remains bound with albumin in the blood.

Normal total serum bilirubin concentration is less than 1mg/dl.

Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, ia a condition characterized by isolated increase in conjugated bilirubin .It usually signifies liver or biliary tract disease.In liver disease usually there is a combined rise in both conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin.

Isolated unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia is a condition where there is an isolated increase in unconjugated bilirubin .This condition is primarily seen in hemolytic disorders and in some genetic defects like Crigler-najjar and Gilbert's syndrome.

LUNG CANCER:REVIEW

Lung cancer,a very dangerous cancer is perhaps the leading cause of cancer deaths in
both female and male individuals.Most of the patients with lung cancer,are current or former cigarette smokers.The smoking cessation projects carried out in several countries has reduced the number of lung cancer deaths in men but it has not been that successful in female individuals in reducing the lung cancer deaths.

The survival of lung cancer patients has definitely improved over the years,due to the improvement of treatment options.[surgery,chemotherapy,radiotherapy].

Lung cancer are malignant lesions arising from the respiratory epithelium like bronchi,bronchiole,alveoli.The major types are squamous cell carcinoma,adenocarcinoma,small cell carcinoma,large cell carcinoma etc.Two most common lung carcinomas are adenocarcinoma[at present perhaps the most common] and squamous cell carcinoma.

Correct histological diagnosis is very important for treatment purpose.Small cell carcinoma,at the time of diagnosis has already spread extensively,so this specific type of lung cancer is usually not amenable to surgery.It is usually treated with chemotherapy.Radiotherapy may or may not be added to chemotherapy.
In contrast the non-small cell carcinomas do not respond to chemotherapy,that well.

Squamous cell,small cell cancers usually occur in the central part of the lung, while adenocarcinomas tend to occur in the peripheral parts of lung.

ENTRECARD:PRESENT SCENARIO

Usually i try to keep the posts of this blog related to health,but as ENTRECARD has really been very close to my blogging life,decided to post something about entrecard.It has really been a very important portal to visit good blogs,interact with the blog authors,but the paid ad concept is somewhat taking the shine out of entrecard.

problems:1.surfing the entrecard blogs is getting monotonous,you are seeing the same ads wherever you go.

2.Every entrecard blog has to spend a lot of time,to visit other entrecard blogs(beside their normal day jobs)

3.The non-paid ads[via ec credits]are loosing the relevance,and the screening time.

4.My personal opinion is this,that entrecard should develop some other ways to earn revenues.

Today i came across an interesting site,called the SHOPwiki.com .This site has created a search engine of all the products available over the internet.This site has indexed a wide range of products ranging from health and beauty[link],men's grooming products[link],hair care products[link],cosmetics and other beauty products[link],skin care products[link],natural health products[link],mineral cosmetics[link] and many more.

This is basically a free service where they have indexed a directory of useful products.They have provided product pictures,a short description and a link to the original store.This site is useful in cutting down the time to search for products in various search engines.

Some of the products that really interested me, are blood pressure monitors,acne related products,personal care attendant training,men's hair care,medicines for asthma,glucometer,pregnancy test kits,medicine store and many more.

CAUSES OF EPISTAXIS

Bleeding from inside the nose is called epistaxis .It can occur in any age group namely children,middle aged and elderly.Epistaxis is a very common cause of emergency visits.

In this post i'll briefly review the causes of epistaxis.

Trauma in the form of finger nail trauma,nose injury,fractures of middle third of the face or the base of the skull is a very common cause of epistaxis.

Infections like acute sinusitis,viral rhinitis, nasal diphtheria,atrophic rhinitis,tuberculosis,granulomatous lesions of the nose like rhinosporidiasis can also cause epistaxis.

Any neglected foreign body in the nose can also cause epistaxis.In certain situations organisms like maggots,leeches get implanted in the nose and cause epistaxis.

Epistaxis may also occur in atmospheric changes like high altitude,sudden decompression as seen in Caisson's disease.[I'll later post an article explaining caisson's disease]

Deviated nasal septum is also a very common cause of nose bleeding...

Certain tumours of the nose and paranasal sinuses like haemangioma,papilloma[benign];carcinoma,sarcoma[malignant] can also present with
epistaxis.

LIVER DISEASE:hepatic cirrhosis may occasionally cause nose bleeding due todeficiency of clotting factors like factor2,7,9,10.

Vicarious menstruation may also cause epistaxis.[nose bleeding at the time of menstruation]
