In one of my previous post 'NOTES FOR CARE GIVERS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS' i have explained in details about the points that are needed to be taken special off.The individuals who have stood beside us,whenever we have fallen, need that special care.
Elderly individuals are more prone to multiple physical ailments namely Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia [forgetfulness],depression, reduction of vision [mainly due to cataract], diminution of hearing[mainly due to nerve deafness],nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, ailments of the heart specially heart failure, osteoporosis or reduction of bone mineral density leading to increased susceptibility of bone fractures etc. Individuals’ care giving for parents, seniors should pay particular attention to these conditions.All of these ailments cannot be totally cured,but if proper steps are implemented,the more serious consequences can be prevented.
Today while surfing i came across two new products.One is the FALL ALERT detector,that alerts the emergency personnel immediately without even pushing emergency button.Unsuspected fall in elderly individuals may occur due to confusion,disorientation as seen in hypoglycemia,seen in diabetic individuals taking insulin.It may also occur in Alzheimer’s disease,certain fractures like the fracture neck femur which are more common in senior citizens.
The other product is a GPS tracking bracelet with two way speaker phone that can be used as a cell phone.This may be a very useful device in case of Alzheimer’s disease,where the affected individual may be left wandering outside due to progressive reduction of memory,specially the short term memory.
Apart from the special care the senior citizens need,these medical alarms may also provide the independence and self confidence they require.
